PRESS RELEASE: CREATING A BETTER FUTURE FOR THE AMERICAN MILITARY AND WINNING THE WAR ON TERROR
PRESS RELEASE: CREATING A BETTER FUTURE FOR THEAMERICAN MILITARY AND WINNING THE WAR ON TERRORFROM THE OFFICE OF CONGRESSMAN DUNCAN HUNTER (R-CA)Washington: (11/17/05) Congressman Duncan Huntercan be seen smiling around the halls of Congress thesedays. He has worked very hard to fund a nimble, yetstrong military. As a Vietnam veteran, he understandsthe needs of the military. Few of his Democraticcolleagues can claim such experience. And yet the Democrats attack the House GOP budget. The Republican plan increases army end strength by40,000 troops. This allows shorter tours of dutywhile fighting terrorists and longer periods stayingat home, with their families. It allows for bettertraining and a more complete military. The GOP planalso includes funding for the Future Combat System(FCS), while the Democrats plan delays implementation. Additionally, the GOP plan keeps funding constant forthe space tracking and airborne laser programs. Theseprograms help build a combat force that is betterequipped to face tomorrow's challenges. The Republican plan is about personal choice andpersonal responsibility. Many soldiers areover-insured by the TRICARE plans. A cafeteria plangives them the ability to decide how to spend theirhealth care money. The Democrats seek to continuetheir status quo, paternalistic, big government plan, foisting large sums of money, inefficiently, on healthcare plans which are never used. The GOP plan allowssoldiers to keep extra cash if they choose not tospend all of their cafeteria allowance on health careplans. We are fighting a war against terrorists. We havesuccessfully made Iraq the central front in the waragainst terror. We cannot go soft and allow ourselvesto be fooled into believing that we cannot be attackedagain. We fight so that our children do not have to.We fight for the safety of our homeland. We fight forthe pride and dignity of being an American. If weyield to temptation, even in the slightest, we givethe terrorist an opportunity. Congressman DuncanHunter has worked too hard for too long to let anybodytarnish his flag. We cannot let the terrorists, architects of 9/11, win this eternal struggle.
